What is the ruling on discarding food containers that have "halal" written on them, and what is the ruling on giving newspapers to others for reuse?

The word "halal (definition)" is not among the magnified terms like the names of Allah, the Exalted. However, it holds sanctity due to its jurisprudential connotation, its mention in the Quran, and its being written in Arabic; therefore, it must be preserved. Newspapers containing magnified terms should be disposed of by burning them, or by wetting and burying them, or by destroying them with a machine. Burying them in a pure place suffices if burning is difficult. It is not permissible to give newspapers to a laundryman or a baker for use in wrapping, because they often contain Quranic verses, prophetic hadiths, and the names of Allah, the Exalted, and using them in such a way is considered degradation. The obligation is to preserve them, or burn them, or bury them. Recycling newspapers and reprocessing them is subject to consideration, and prohibition is preferable, as they might be used in inappropriate ways. As for reusing them by reading and benefiting from them, there is no harm in that if they are free from objectionable content.
