What was Imam Al-Dhahabi's stance on Ibn Taymiyyah, and did he write a biography of him?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Imam Al-Dhahabi was one of the students of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, and he translated his biography, illustrating his status and knowledge, saying about him: "He is too great for someone like me to call attention to his life story. If I were to swear between the Rukn and the Maqam, I would swear that I have never seen anyone like him, and that he has never seen anyone like himself." He also said about his knowledge of the Sunnah: "It is true to say that any hadith unknown to Ibn Taymiyyah is not a hadith." As for the treatise (Zaghl al-Ilm) attributed to Al-Dhahabi, in which he attacks Ibn Taymiyyah, the correct view is that its attribution to him is not valid.
