What is the ruling on a wife whose mother urges her to divorce while she is not being harmed, and what is the ruling on a mother who caused the divorce of her children?
A wife is not obligated to obey her mother's request for her to divorce her husband, for two reasons:
1. No obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator: As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no obedience in sin; obedience is only in what is good," and "There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." 2. The prohibition of seeking divorce without a Shari'ah-compliant excuse: As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without a sound reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her."
It is permissible for the wife to refrain from visiting her mother alone if she fears that this would negatively impact her relationship with her husband. She can visit her with her husband or with someone who might prevent the mother's negative influence, and reduce visits to the extent that the harm is removed, while continuing to show kindness to her mother in ways that cause no harm. One who corrupts a woman against her husband is warned against, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not of us who incites a woman against her husband."
