To what extent is the hadith true which states that abandoning supplication for one's parents severs one's sustenance?

A hadith with this wording is not known to be مرفوع (traced back to the Prophet, peace be upon him), nor موقوف (traced back to a Companion). However, Al-'Ajluni mentioned a fabricated hadith: "Whoever writes with a broken pen and combs with a broken comb, Allah will open for him seventy doors of poverty."
