The answer

We advise the questioner to learn the rulings of the religion and to avoid obsessive doubts (waswasah). Semen (mani) has two characteristics: its distinctive odor, and the pleasure felt upon its emission, followed by a subsiding of desire. Pre-seminal fluid (madhiy) is a thin, whitish liquid that is emitted upon thinking about sex or foreplay. Ghusl (ritual bath) is obligatory if the questioner is certain that semen has been emitted. If she is in doubt whether the discharge is semen or pre-seminal fluid, the easier option is to act upon the opinion of the Shafi’is and choose between them. If the discharge cannot be identified as either semen or pre-seminal fluid, then it is considered vaginal discharge, which is pure but nullifies ablution (wudu). If these discharges are continuous, they are subject to the same ruling as menstrual bleeding (istihada): she should perform ablution for each prayer after its time has entered. If she is not afflicted with incontinence, then the emission of these discharges nullifies ablution, and if anything is emitted during prayer, she must repeat it. If she is certain that she neglected ghusl or wudu when it was obligatory, she must make up the missed prayers to the best of her ability, with the permissibility of adopting the view of some scholars who do not obligate making up prayers for someone who was ignorant of the ruling.
