What is the response to one who claims that Islam oppressed women in the waiting period (iddah) following the death of a man and a woman?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to say that Islam has oppressed women, as this is an aspersion on the justice of Allah. Faith is based on submission to the command of Allah and His Messenger. Islam has honored women as mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives, and has made Paradise beneath the feet of mothers, and encouraged the upbringing of daughters. Justice does not mean equality in all things; rather, it is placing something in its rightful place. The differences in inheritance, the permissibility of polygyny for men but not for women, and the fact that a man does not observe an 'iddah period upon the death of his wife while a woman does observe an 'iddah upon the death of her husband, are rulings of Islamic law that have profound wisdoms and great benefits. The 'iddah of a woman prevents the corruption of the mixing of lineages, as she might be pregnant, and the child would then be attributed to someone other than its father. This is what the Creator of humanity knows: "Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?"
