Was the Prophet Muhammad infallible in worldly matters, and did God correct him for every mistake therein, and is all of the Sunnah and Hadith that we follow indirectly from God, taking into account the Hadith: "I am only a human being; if I command you with something concerning your religion, then take it, but if I command you with something from my own opinion, then I am only a human being"?

Prophets are infallible in conveying the Sacred Law from Allah; they do not err in conveying revelation or forget it. They are also infallible from major sins and minor sins that indicate baseness. They may err in minor sins that do not indicate baseness, but they are not condoned for them; rather, they repent. They may also err in worldly matters that fall under human conjecture and ijtihad (independent reasoning) and are not revelation, such as the incident of pollinating palm trees, or his opinion in matters of war. However, shaving the beard is not among these; rather, it is a religious matter commanded by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, through revelation from Allah, to differ from the polytheists.

Natural human actions performed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, by virtue of his humanity, such as eating, drinking, and sitting, do not require emulation, unless they are accompanied by an intention of worship, legislation, or an invitation to follow. As for what emanated from him in the manner of legislation, it is a subject for emulation. Legislation is identified by being a clarification of a commanded matter, or by his explicit call to emulate, or by encouraging it alongside his action.

The default for the Prophet’s sayings, peace and blessings be upon him, is that they are for legislation, because he is a conveyer from his Lord, and what he says in religion is nothing but truth. If he exerted ijtihad in a worldly matter and did not conform to Allah's judgment, he is not upheld in his error. Everything the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, says and commands is revelation from Allah, whether it is direct revelation, a correct ijtihad that was affirmed, or an error that was corrected to its truth. As for purely worldly matters, the Companions did not concern themselves with transmitting them.
