What is the ruling on treating a wife badly, knowing that she does not pray, sometimes fasts while in a state of janabah, and watches Western TV series, and that the husband cannot bear to look at her or be near her?
The Muslim family is founded upon religion. The husband must enjoin his wife to pray and persevere with her, seeking help from righteous people. If the wife does not become upright, then it is appropriate to separate from her due to her inability to build a Muslim household and raise children with an Islamic upbringing.
If the wife is disliked due to physical imperfections, but she is upright in her conduct, then overlook her flaws, for Allah Almighty says: ﴿فَإِنْ كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئاً وَيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ خَيْراً كَثِيراً﴾ [An-Nisa: 19] (But if you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good).
If she is unable to guard her chastity due to her flaws, then one may marry a second wife, provided justice is maintained. Alternatively, one may divorce her if it is impossible to marry another or to maintain justice. However, do not rush into divorce, for it is the most disliked of permissible things to Allah, especially if there are children between you. It is possible to mend the relationship by her becoming upright in her faith, showing affection towards you, and adorning herself, and by you overlooking her flaws.
Regarding watching TV series, you must not allow her to watch them, for Allah Almighty says: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَاراً وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ﴾ [At-Tahrim: 6] (O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones). This should be done with wisdom, good counsel, gentleness, and kindness.
