Is it permissible for a citizen to take stray livestock and benefit from its price or meat, knowing that he has already taken 20 heads of it?

If the cattle have no owner or their owner abandoned them due to inability to feed them, then it is permissible to take possession of them and benefit from them. And whoever finds an animal whose owners are unable to care for it, and then revives it, it belongs to him. However, if the cattle are owned by someone, it is not permissible to take them, and whatever was taken from them must be returned. If the cattle are owned and have gone astray, the Hanbali and Shafi'i schools of thought hold that it is not permissible to pick them up, similar to camels, because they can defend themselves against small predators. While others believe it is permissible to pick them up like sheep. The former opinion is more cautious. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade picking up stray camels.
