Is "Tafsir Ibn Abbas" authored by him, and is the story of the "Gharaniq" in "Fath al-Bari" authentic?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The book "Tafsir Ibn Abbas," printed under the title "Tanwir al-Miqbas min Tafsir Ibn Abbas," is a fabricated work whose attribution to Ibn Abbas is incorrect. It is not known that he authored any book on Tafsir. The book relies in its narrations on weak chains of transmission, most of which revolve around Muhammad ibn Marwan al-Suddi al-Saghir, from Muhammad ibn al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas. These narrators are accused of lying and fabrication.

As for the story of the Gharaniq, scholars have differed concerning it. It has not been narrated with a sound chain of transmission mentioning any of the Companions. It might be something that Satan cast into the ears of the disbelievers.
