Does reciting Surat Al-Baqarah daily benefit, despite frequent absentmindedness and lack of contemplation?
Contemplating the Qur'an during recitation is a divinely mandated requirement, as it is a means to understand the intent of the verses and the purposes of the Qur'an's revelation. As Allah Almighty says: {A Book We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its verses} and {Do they not then ponder over the Qur'an, or are there locks upon their hearts?}. The reciter is rewarded for the recitation even if they do not ponder, due to the generality of the hadith: "Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have a good deed." Nevertheless, contemplation is very important, and it is more beneficial for the heart than reciting the Qur'an without contemplation; for reciting a verse with reflection is better than completing a recitation (khatmah) without contemplation. This was the habit of the Salaf, as Ibn Mas'ud said: "Do not rattle through the Qur'an like poetry, nor scatter it like dry dates. Pause at its wonders and stir hearts with it."
