What are the rights of a stepmother over her husband's children?

The father's wife is a mahram, so it is permissible to shake hands with her and be alone with her if there is no fear of fitna. One should be dutiful and kind to her because she is among the father's loved ones, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the most dutiful of deeds is for a man to maintain ties with the loved ones of his father." If financial support is obligatory for the father, it is also obligatory for his wife.
