The father's wife is not among the kin (dhawu al-arham) whose ties must be maintained, because kin are relatives connected by lineage. However, simply being a Muslim entails mutual rights, and a Muslim living with his father's wife in one house necessitates rights beyond merely the right of one Muslim over another, such as helping one's companion in matters of his faith and worldly affairs and offering him advice. Maintaining ties with the father's wife is considered a form of filial piety towards the father. Responding to evil with good brings affection and protects against the instigations of Satan.
