What is the ruling on one who is killed in demonstrations while being aware of the danger of going out, and is that considered suicide?
If demonstrations are permissible, then whoever participates in them with the intention of enjoining good and forbidding evil, clarifying and demanding the truth, redressing grievances, supporting the oppressed, and aiding the distressed, their bearing of risks therein is praiseworthy and rewarded.
Al-Izz ibn Abd al-Salam indicated the permissibility of endangering lives (taghrir bil-nufus) in obligatory fighting and in enjoining good and forbidding evil in the presence of tyrannical rulers. He considered this to be a means of strengthening the religion and supporting the Lord of the Worlds, citing the : "The best jihad is a word of truth spoken to a tyrannical ruler," because endangering one's life in this context is greater than the danger taken by mujahidin.
He also clarified that condoning sins (taqrir ala al-maasi) when unable to denounce them with the hand or tongue is permissible. However, denouncing them while fearing for oneself is recommended and encouraged, because risking one's life to strengthen the religion is commanded, and he likened it to risking lives in fighting polytheists and rebels, emphasizing that speaking the truth loudly is not suicide; rather, it is as far as can be from it.
