A Muslim should fear his sins and hope for his Lord's grace, so that he may be secure from Allah's deception and be saved from despair. Remembering one's sins prevents arrogance, and remembering Allah's mercy saves one from despondency. The gnostic treads a path between observing divine favors and scrutinizing the flaws of the self, which is encompassed in the formula of Sayyid al-Istighfar (The Chief of Supplications for Forgiveness). The closest path to Allah is destitution, where the servant sees himself as needy and poor before his Lord. The essence of servitude revolves around complete love and utter humility.
