The answer

The permissibility of supererogatory prayers (Nawafil) in a car has three scenarios:

The first scenario: Performing supererogatory prayers while traveling, seated and not facing the Qibla. This is permissible by consensus.

The second scenario: Performing supererogatory prayers while in one's hometown, in a stationary car, seated and facing the Qibla. This is also permissible by consensus, and the one praying receives half the reward of someone praying while standing.

The third scenario: Performing supererogatory prayers while in one's hometown, in a moving car, seated and not facing the Qibla. This is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The majority of jurists do not permit it, while some scholars, such as Abu Yusuf and Muhammad, the two companions of Abu Hanifa, have permitted it. The preponderant opinion is that it is not permissible except while traveling, as this is what has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

If one performs a supererogatory prayer while seated, despite being able to stand, they should prostrate on the ground and not merely gesture, and they will receive half the reward of one who prays standing.
