Is the recitation of the Qur’an in the night prayer counted towards completing the Qur’an, and does the length of the verse affect the counting of the thousand verses by which the one who prays at night is recorded among the Muqantireen?
The matter of completing the recitation (khatmah) is flexible, whether what is recited outside of prayer is counted, or if it is specifically for the prayer. It is better to continue reciting both inside and outside of prayer to complete the khatmah. As for the reward for one who prays with a thousand verses, it is established in the of Abdullah ibn Amr, and it is specific to the night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl). In this regard, long verses and short verses are equal, based on the apparent meaning of the text. However, praying with a thousand long verses is not the same as praying with a thousand short ones, because the superiority is determined by the number of letters.
