Is it considered adultery for one to penetrate a woman anally while he is clothed?

Adultery committed without direct penetration is strictly forbidden, and there is a difference of opinion regarding the obligation of the Hadd (prescribed punishment) for it. The majority of scholars hold that it is equal whether it occurs through the front or back passage. Abu Hanifa disagreed, not equating the back passage with the front. The majority of scholars are of the opinion that there is no Hadd if penetration occurs with an obstruction (e.g., a barrier), while the Shafi'is disagreed. Some Malikis differentiated between a light and a thick obstruction.

Among the conditions for the Hadd of adultery are: the insertion of the original glans by a sane person, without an obstruction according to the majority, and from a human being. The adulterer is not punished with Hadd except by confession, or by a visible pregnancy, or by the testimony of four free, adult, just men who see it like a kohl stick entering the kohl container and testify at the same time.

Thus, the adultery for which Hadd is applied is: "The penetration by a responsible, Muslim individual of a human's private part, front or back, by inserting the glans or its equivalent." Jurists differed regarding the obligation of Hadd in the case of penetration with a thick obstruction. The Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis held that Hadd is not obligatory, while the Shafi'is believe that Hadd is obligatory even if the obstruction is thick. As for a light obstruction that does not prevent pleasure, Hadd is obligatory according to the majority.
