The permission of the father is not required for marriage to a chaste Muslim woman or a chaste woman of the People of the Book. However, it is forbidden to marry a woman who is not of the People of the Book, or a woman of the People of the Book who is not chaste. It is not permissible to marry an unchaste woman, whether she is a disbeliever or a Muslim, unless she repents. A free, adult, sane, and mature man may marry himself without anyone's permission. Marriage for a specified period is forbidden, as it is a void temporary marriage (mut'ah). Marriage is not valid without the permission of the guardian. If a woman has no guardian, then her guardian is the Muslim ruler or his representative.
