Is following daily world news among the matters that do not concern a Muslim, and thus falls under the Hadith: "From the excellence of a person's Islam is his leaving alone that which does not concern him"?

Following global news and current events is essential for the contemporary Muslim, as the world has become a small village where events intertwine and influence one another. This is part of the required awareness, and not a matter of abandoning what does not concern him. Rather, a Muslim must strive to understand his world to succeed in spreading his da'wah (call to Islam) and civilization. However, this متابعة (following/monitoring) should not overwhelm a Muslim's time or distract him from beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and he must avoid the forbidden things associated with it.
