The custom of some people sacrificing an animal when buying something new, like a car or a house, believing it repels the evil eye or evil, is forbidden and not legislated. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that this is a pre-Islamic belief. The Permanent Committee also affirmed that this act, if done to appease jinn and ward off unpleasant events, is polytheism (shirk (definition)).
