Which prophet delayed the Asr prayer, what were the reasons for his delaying it, and in which Surah was his story mentioned?
It is mentioned in the Tafsir (exegesis) of the story of Sulaiman (peace be upon him) in Surah Sad that he became preoccupied with inspecting horses to the extent that he missed the Asr prayer. It was said that this indeed referred to the Asr prayer. Ibn Kathir stated that this was due to forgetfulness, not intentional, just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was preoccupied during the Battle of Al-Khandaq and missed the Asr prayer. Or it was permissible in their religion to delay prayer for the excuse of war. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said that Sulaiman (peace be upon him) became preoccupied with the horses until the sun set, so he cut off their necks and hamstrung them as a form of self-retribution because they distracted him from the remembrance of Allah. Similar to this is the burning of the belongings of a betrayer (ghāl).
