What is the ruling on holding feasts and returning invitations for relatives and others while the husband is in debt, and is it permissible to use a doorbell for the apartment?

The fundamental principle regarding feasts ( عزائم ) and banquets ( ولائم ) is permissibility. However, they may become forbidden if accompanied by a prohibited act, or they may become recommended if their purpose is to foster companionship and affection.

Repaying a due debt is obligatory. Delaying it while having the means to pay, and without the creditor's permission, is an unlawful injustice, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) sayings: "The procrastination of a rich person is injustice," and "The delay of a solvent person makes his honor and punishment permissible."

Therefore, it is not permissible to hold feasts or banquets if they lead to delaying debt repayment, unless with the creditors' permission.
