The answer

The wedding feast (walimat an-nikah) is originally the responsibility of the husband, and it is best to hold it after consummation. However, it is permissible for it to be held with the marriage contract, or after it, or spread out from the beginning of the contract until the completion of consummation. Nevertheless, custom dictates that it usually takes place shortly before consummation. There is no harm in the wife remaining in her family's home for a period after the contract, nor in her going out and traveling with her husband with the permission of her guardian, because what matters in this regard is either the condition stipulated or the prevailing custom. After the contract, the woman is a wife, and everything from her becomes permissible for her husband, except that the stipulated condition or the custom must be observed. Hastening the consummation is the Sunnah.
