The question

Is it permissible to give an divorced maternal aunt a portion of zakat money, knowing that her only income is 200 Jordanian dinars per month from her ex-husband, and that this is done on the basis that one's relatives are more deserving of kindness?

The answer

Your poor maternal aunt who does not have enough for her basic needs of food, drink, clothing, shelter, and medicine is deserving of zakat. Giving zakat to her is more preferable, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Charity given to a relative is two-fold: charity and maintaining family ties." A divorced woman is not entitled to maintenance unless she is in her revocable waiting period ('iddah raj'iyah) or is pregnant.
