The answer

Goods stockpiled for sale, in their three types (monopolized goods, goods sold all at once, goods sold in parts at different times), are treated like money in terms of zakat. Zakat is due on them every year if a hawl (lunar year) passes over them and they reach the nisab (85 grams of gold). At the beginning of each hawl, the merchant must appraise the goods and combine their value with the money he possesses and debts that are expected to be repaid. Then, he subtracts the debts he owes, and pays zakat on the remaining wealth at a rate of a quarter of a tenth (2.5%). As for uncollectible debts, zakat is not due on them until they are collected, at which point zakat is paid for one year. This is the view of the majority of scholars.
