Why do some people insist on applying perfume to the back of the hand?

Using perfume is a Sunnah. Specifying its application to the back of the hand has no evidence, but there is no harm in it. This might be to avoid transferring the perfume to food or tangible items, or to prevent its scent from transferring to those with whom one shakes hands.
