The vessels referred to are those in which dates or raisins were placed with water until sweetened, and which might then ferment. The reason for the prohibition was the rapid fermentation of what was placed in them. "Ad-Dubbaa’" is a dried gourd, "al-Hantam" are jars, and "al-Muzaffat" is a vessel coated with tar. In his commentary, Al-Nawawi stated that "ad-Dubbaa’" is the dried gourd, "al-Hantam" are green jars, "an-Naqeern" is a tree trunk hollowed out in the middle, and "al-Muqayyar" is the tar-coated vessel. The reason for prohibiting nabidh (infusion) in them was the quick intoxication it caused, making it unlawful and impure, and rendering it financially worthless. This prohibition was later abrogated by the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) statement: "I had forbidden you from making nabidh except in waterskins. Now make nabidh in any vessel, but do not drink that which intoxicates."
