Who is at fault in the dispute that occurred between the spouses? Is the wife considered disobedient (nashiz) for going to her family's home and refusing to return unless her father requests it? What should the husband do with his wife and her parents? Is he permitted to hit her with a non-bruising strike if she wrongs him?

A wife's refusal to visit her husband's family is not considered nushuz (rebellion), nor is her verbal abuse towards him. However, she has the right to discipline them both. A husband is not permitted to strike his wife on her face or head. If a wife is rebellious (nashizat), the husband may discipline her himself, according to Islamic guidelines. Among the permissible means of discipline, after admonition and abandonment in bed, is non-brutal striking, though refraining from it is better. The wife must obey her husband in what is right, and the husband must treat his wife kindly and be patient with her.
