How can we reconcile verse 56 from Surah Adh-Dhariyat, "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me," with verse 72 from Surah Al-Ahzab, "Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant"?

Quranic verses do not contradict each other. So, His saying, the Almighty: (And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me) clarifies the purpose of creating jinn and mankind, which is worship. And His saying: (Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man undertook it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant) explains that man chose to bear the Trust, which refers to the religious obligations. There is no contradiction between the two verses; because Allah created man for worship, and granted him freedom of choice. So, whoever believes fulfills the Trust, and whoever disbelieves betrays it. The Trust refers to the obligations of servitude, and by undertaking this Trust, man has chosen to fulfill its requirements. And what is meant by His saying: (except to worship Me) is the intention of obligation and the command to worship, not its occurrence.
