How can one deal with a mother who belittles her daughter and hurts her with words because of a previous engagement that did not materialize, and makes her current engagement difficult, while the daughter wishes to marry and form a family?

The right of the mother is immense, and showing dutifulness to her is among the most incumbent duties. Her right is not forfeited by her ill-treatment, because Allah commanded to accompany parents, even if they are polytheists, with kindness. And the mother is instinctively inclined to love her children and show them mercy. What emanates from the mother in words or actions that cause anger may be driven by her love and concern for her children's well-being. Therefore, it is obligatory to be patient with her, show her dutifulness, and obey her in what is right, bearing in mind that the suitor is a stranger to the fiancée until the legal marriage contract is concluded, and it is not permissible to engage in extensive conversation with him except out of necessity.
