What is the ruling on girls wearing necklaces with a symbol resembling a cross around their necks?

Wearing a cross around the neck or on the body is a distinctive practice of Christians. Whoever does it out of inclination towards them and love for them has committed an act of disbelief (kufr). However, whoever does it in jest or without love for its adherents has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger, but has not fallen into disbelief. Khalil ibn Ishaq al-Maliki stated that apostasy occurs through an action that implies disbelief, such as tying the zunnar (a distinctive belt). Al-Dardir explained that this refers to wearing the specific attire of a disbeliever if done out of love and inclination towards its adherents. As for wearing it in jest, it is forbidden (haram) but not an act of disbelief.
