Is a woman's entire body, with the exception of the two private parts, a place for the adornment mentioned in His (the Most High) saying: {And not display their adornment except to their husbands… etc. the verse}, or are there specific places for adornment? And is the designation of these places based on Sharīʿah (Islamic law) or custom? And is it obligatory to adhere to the custom of the female Companions in this, or is it permissible to establish new customs for places of adornment and disclose them?

Scholars differ on the limits of a woman's awrah (intimate parts) in front of her mahrams (unmarriageable kin), but it is not permissible to display zinah (adornment) within the boundaries of this awrah. As for outside these boundaries, it is permissible without lust or suspicion. Adornment is of two types: apparent, which does not require covering and may be looked at (such as clothes, kohl, rings, the face, and the hands), and hidden (such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and anklets), which must be covered from non-mahram men. A husband may look at hidden adornment and derive pleasure from it, while other mahrams may look without deriving pleasure. A free woman must cover what is between the navel and the knee in front of her mahrams and other women. A woman must be modest in front of her mahrams and observe their ranks in terms of sanctity and modesty.
