Is the custom of distributing one's first salary among one's relatives a permissible practice or an innovation?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no harm in continuing this good habit, for a sane, responsible individual may donate his wealth to whomever he wishes, especially if the giving is designated for needy relatives. This is not considered an innovation (bid'ah), but rather, whoever performs it should intend thereby to draw closer to Allah by distributing his wealth to his relatives.
