What is the amount of zakat due on a shareholding company operating in the field of agricultural production of strawberry and pepper crops, after determining the net profit at the end of the year?
If the agricultural produce consists of fruits, Zakat is not obligatory on the fruits themselves according to the majority of scholars. However, if a year passes on the proceeds from the crops, their value must be assessed and added to the price of what was sold from them, and to cash or other trade goods. Then Zakat is paid on the total sum. This applies if the company belongs to one person. But if it belongs to several people, each person pays Zakat on his share if a year has passed on it and it reaches the
nisab either alone or when combined with cash or other trade goods. The nisab for banknotes is the equivalent of eighty-five grams of gold, and the amount to be given is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
