The (religious edict) we adopt is that a conditional divorce takes effect upon the fulfillment of the condition, regardless of whether the husband intended to enact a divorce or merely intended to emphasize or threaten. Repeatedly conditioning divorce does not multiply the divorces; rather, only one divorce takes place. Some scholars, like Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, hold the view that if a conditional divorce was not intended to enact a divorce, then its ruling is similar to an oath by Allah: the divorce does not occur, but an expiation for an oath becomes binding.
