What is the ruling on someone who adheres to the the five daily prayers but delays them past their appointed times for minor reasons? Does the obligation of the prayer fall away from him, coupled with sin, or is his ruling that of one who abandons prayer?

Delaying prayer beyond its prescribed time without a valid religious excuse is a form of negligence and a squandering of it. This subjects the one who does so to the threat mentioned in the Almighty's saying: (But there came after them a generation who neglected prayer and followed [their] desires; so they will soon meet evil). Prayer does not become void by delay; rather, it must be made up according to the majority of scholars. The one who delays it falls under Allah Almighty's will, according to the hadith of Ubadah ibn al-Samit, may Allah be pleased with him: "Five prayers Allah has made obligatory upon His servants. Whoever brings them and does not neglect anything from them, out of belittling their right, will have a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not bring them, he has no covenant with Allah; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will admit him [to Paradise]."
