How can we reconcile the Hadith, "My Ummah will be forgiven for their mistakes and forgetfulness," with Hadiths such as, "Are people thrown into Hellfire on their faces except for the harvests of their tongues?" and "Indeed, a man may utter a word, not realizing its significance, by which he plummets into the fire of Hell"? Do these latter Hadiths refer specifically to forbidden speech uttered intentionally, or to speech in general?

There is no contradiction between the hadiths of forgiveness for error and forgetfulness and the hadiths of accountability for the tongue. This is because the one who speaks ill is neither mistaken nor forgetful; rather, he is deliberate, intentional, and disrespectful, paying no heed to the consequences. Therefore, a servant is responsible for his words and must ponder a word before uttering it. If it is good, he should speak; otherwise, he should refrain. He must guard his tongue, for a word can necessitate Allah's pleasure or His wrath.
