Is washing the private parts and the impurities surrounding them three times, and the right and left halves of each of them three times during ghusl of janabah (major ritual impurity) recommended or an innovation? And should the ghusl and the prayers performed with it be repeated?
The ghusl (ritual bath) and prayer are valid. Tripling the washing of the entire body is recommended by the Hanbalis and others. However, there is no text from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, confirming the Sunnah of tripling the washing of the private parts. It is authentically established in his guidance, peace and blessings be upon him, as narrated by Aisha and Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with them, that he would begin by washing his hands and private parts, then perform ablution, then pour water over his head three handfuls, then pour water over the rest of his body. These two hadiths do not mention repeating the washing of the private parts. Al-Awza'i, Al-Dardir, and Al-Nawawi explicitly stated that it should be washed once. Tripling the washing of the private parts is not established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but it does not affect the validity of the ghusl or the prayer.
