What should a woman do who found a gold ring in a garbage dump, sold it for 600 Egyptian pounds, and should she give the money in charity or give it to her husband, and is it permissible to give it to her sister who suffers from mental retardation?

The woman who found the ring and did not announce it for a year, but rather sold it, must repent to Allah. The obligation of announcement (ta'reef) lapses after the passage of a year according to many scholars. If she is able to identify the owner of the ring, she must deliver its value to him. Otherwise, she must give its value in charity for good causes or to the poor and needy. It is permissible to give the money to the husband or sister if they are poor. However, the money should not be given directly to the sister, but to her guardian.
