How is a dream or vision correctly interpreted on a religious basis, and what should one do when they see a dream that gives them hope but they do not know its meaning?

Interpreting dreams is permissible for those skilled in it, namely individuals with discernment who can distinguish between a true vision (ru'ya) and a mere dream (hulm), and who can understand the ramifications of the parables presented within the vision. Nevertheless, its interpretation remains subject to both correctness and error, just as Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) erred in interpreting a vision in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him). If a person sees what he loves, he should praise Allah and not tell anyone except those he loves, and he should ask Allah for His bounty.
