A person goes through three life stages: this worldly life (Dunya), the interspace (Barzakh), and the Hereafter (Akhirah). Punishment and reward occur primarily upon the body in this worldly life, primarily upon the soul in Barzakh, and upon both the soul and the body together in the Hereafter. Paradise and Hell are created and existing; they will not perish. The sacred texts indicate that after death, a person will be exposed to either bliss or torment, and that this occurs primarily to the soul and subordinately to the body in Barzakh. Righteous believers will enjoy bliss in Paradise in a manner suitable for the life of Barzakh, and similarly, disbelievers and disobedient individuals will experience torment from Hellfire that is suitable for this life. The Prophet's (peace be upon him) vision showed the torment of some disobedient individuals in Barzakh, such as those who abandon the Qur'an and prayer, liars, adulterers, and those who consume usury.
