What is the ruling on the itikaf of one who left his place of itikaf to attend to various needs and had intercourse with his wife at night? And does the warning mentioned in the verse apply to him?
The majority of scholars hold that the minimum duration for I'tikaf (spiritual retreat) is what is customarily recognized. Therefore, if the one performing I'tikaf intends a specific period and it concludes, there is no harm upon him. However, if he intends a period such as "a day or a night," he must complete it. I'tikaf is invalidated by exiting for no need, or by intentional or unintentional sexual intercourse, according to some jurists. It is a matter of consensus among scholars for one who intentionally has intercourse with his wife while in I'tikaf. Sexual intercourse during I'tikaf has been prohibited. I'tikaf is not obligatory except by a vow. If someone invalidates his I'tikaf, he is not required to make it up, unless he had vowed to perform I'tikaf for a specific period and then invalidated it, in which case he must resume it.
