Did any of the Prophet's Companions (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) live in palaces, and what is the limit of extravagance in housing?

The Companions were the most ascetic people in worldly matters. They did not refrain from living in palaces when the world opened up to them. Rather, they lived in what they found, thanked Allah, and fulfilled Allah's rights concerning their wealth. Examples include Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, who owned a palace in Al-Aqiq, and Anas ibn Malik, who also had a palace. There is no harm in living in palaces for someone who fulfills Allah's rights concerning their wealth and thanks Him for His blessings. This is not extravagance for one who has been granted ease in life and an abundance of provision. The limit of extravagance differs from person to person.
