What is the ruling on a wife's refusal to fulfill her husband's right to intimacy due to her lack of attraction to his appearance, or his lack of romanticism or expression of love?

Love of beauty is innate. If a woman dislikes her husband due to his ugliness to the point that she fears she will not be able to observe God's limits, the Sharia permits her to seek khul' (divorce initiated by the wife). Good marital relations require patience, overlooking faults, and focusing on the good aspects of the other's character, as Allah Almighty says: ﴿And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.﴾ The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "No believing man should hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." A wife's patience with her husband's silence and his weak expression of emotions carries great reward. There is no sin upon her for complying with him while disliking it, as long as she does not show it, and this preserves family stability. Feelings of love are not a prerequisite for marital stability. Indeed, Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Not all homes are built on love, but rather on companionship based on lineage and Islam." These feelings can be developed by excelling in companionship, showing affection and love through effort, striving to enrich feelings of affection with kind words and gifts, cooperating in obedience to Allah, while seeking Allah's help and supplication.
