Does a divorce issued by a husband while he is angry and coerced take effect?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a man divorces his wife under duress, such as her threatening to kill herself if he does not divorce her, and the husband believes the threat to be serious and fears its occurrence, then the divorce does not take place. This is based on the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah has overlooked for my nation mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do." This is also because one who is coerced has no intention or will, and is therefore like a madman or one who is asleep.
