What is the ruling on throwing uneaten leftover food into the garbage?

If the food is still good, it is not permissible to throw it in the trash, because it is an ingratitude for the blessing and may cause its disappearance, as stated in the Quran: "And Allah presents an example: a city that was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear because of what they used to do."

If you do not need it, then give it to someone in need, or gift it to relatives and neighbors, according to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Muslim women, let no neighbor belittle a gift to her neighbor, even if it is a sheep's trot."

If that is not possible, then it should be placed in a place where poultry or similar animals can benefit from it, even if it spoils, but one should not leave it until it spoils. Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned regarding found food: "Whoever finds food that will not last, and no one claims it in the presence of its finding, then he is not obliged to announce it while waiting for its owner, nor should he keep it until it spoils. Rather, he has the choice to give it as charity or eat it if he is poor and in need of it."
