Is it permissible to give from the Zakat money to one's parents or siblings?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If two people share money or a business, each of them must pay zakat on their share if it reaches the nisab, and mingling of assets does not affect this. It is permissible for a wife to give zakat from her wealth to her father and brothers because she is not obligated to spend on them. It is permissible for a husband to give his zakat to his brothers for their sustenance or marriage, as he is not obligated to spend on them if their father is alive. It is permissible to give zakat to one's father to repay his debts. As for spending on one's father from zakat, if the muzakki (the one paying zakat) possesses enough wealth to cover his own needs and those of his children, and more, then he is obligated to spend on his father and should not give him from zakat. However, if his wealth is meager and not sufficient for his needs, it is permissible to give him from zakat.
