What is the ruling on eating the meat of crocodiles, elephants, hippopotamuses, and winged termites?

Scholars differ concerning the ruling on eating crocodile meat. The majority of jurists are of the opinion that it is unlawful (haram (definition)), while the Malikis and one narration from Ahmad permit it. As for the elephant, it is categorized with animals possessing fangs, which are unlawful to eat according to the agreement of the majority of scholars. Scholars have explicitly stated the permissibility of eating hippopotamus meat. As for ants, it is forbidden to eat them because there is a prohibition against killing them.
