Is a person held accountable for the evil whisperings of Satan and the soul that pass through his mind, and are they recorded against him, whether good or bad?

The rulings concerning the intention (hamm) for a good deed or a bad deed can be summarized into four types:

1. Intention for a good deed: A full good deed is recorded, even if it is not performed, provided that it is a firm resolve coupled with an eagerness to perform the action.

2. Intention for a bad deed, but abandoned for the sake of Allah: A full good deed is recorded if the servant abandons it out of fear of Allah the Almighty.

3. Intention for a bad deed, but abandoned for other than Allah, or pursued: A bad deed is recorded if it is abandoned out of fear of created beings, or if one pursues it but destiny prevents its execution.

4. Intention for a bad deed where the resolve dissipates: If it is merely a fleeting thought that does not settle in the soul, one is not held accountable for it. If it pertains to independent actions of the heart, such as disbelief (kufr) or hypocrisy (nifaq), one is held accountable for it. If it pertains to actions of the limbs, and the servant persists in it and firmly resolves their intention, the majority of scholars hold that one is held accountable for it, and a single bad deed is recorded.
